How to surrender to us:
[We do not take parakeets, pigeons, budgies, canaries, doves, ducks, or chickens.]
We understand that life happens, and you may find yourself in a situation where you cannot care for your companion parrot and are faced with the tough decision to re-home. Rest assured that your feathered friend will be handled with the utmost care and respect. Each surrendered bird is taken to a qualified avian veterinarian and given an appropriately sized cage with perches and toys. Our birds are given plenty of love and attention, and special care is taken to ensure they are fed the best diet possible. We are committed to providing the best possible care for your bird during this transition.
Although we don’t require a fee to surrender your bird, a donation is kindly accepted to help us get your bird on the right track to adoption.
Instructions:
- Please fill out the online surrender application.
- Please be as thorough as possible when filling out the application, including as much history about the bird as possible. Your detailed information will help us ensure your bird can adjust to its new surroundings and find the perfect home. Your involvement in this process is crucial and greatly appreciated.
- After we receive your application, you will receive an email and/or phone call from our surrender coordinator to arrange a surrender interview.
** Our volunteer surrender coordinator will call or text you from a 440 area code. Calls are generally returned on Saturdays or Sundays. - If your surrender is due to a medical emergency, please call and leave a message at 419-234-1486. We will get back to you as soon as possible or take the animal to the nearest avian veterinarian.
- Once a cage for your parrot becomes available, we will help to arrange for the drop-off or transport if needed to get your bird to the rescue.
About your interview:
The interview lets us know your bird better and understand their unique needs. This helps us make the best arrangements based on our available open cages. We receive approximately 8 to 10 requests a week to take in parrots, so we ask for your patience and understanding. We do our best to accommodate everyone, ensuring each request is considered and valued. However, there are times when we need some time before we can take in your bird. We recommend contacting another rescue, in which case we will give you our recommendation.
There is no fee to relinquish a bird to us.
Please complete our surrender contract so that we have as much information as possible about your bird and its history. This is important when re-homing your bird.
If you have found a lost companion bird, please contact us ASAP for assistance. We do not take in pigeons, doves, finches, or parakeets.
If you find a hurt or injured wild bird, please contact the Ohio Wildlife Center.
