Foster

Unfortunately, in the U.S., it is estimated that parrots are re-homed approximately 7 times before they die. That means that the amount of birds needing to be rescued is quite high. Most rescues have a waiting list, and we are no exception. As much as we would love to take in every bird that needs our help, we only have so much room.

The rescue always needs qualified individuals to help foster birds while they wait for their forever home. You ask who would be qualified? Qualified individuals would have the following traits:

  • Has a special love for parrots. Lots of patience.
  • Understand parrot behaviors.
  • Can help rehabilitate parrots for rehoming.
  • Is willing to assist in any medical emergencies.

What To Expect As A Foster

The Charlie Brown Bird Rescue will provide a cage and carrier (when available), along with appropriate perches, toys, food and water dishes, and other essential supplies needed for your foster bird’s care. We will also provide enough of our custom dry food mix to get you started and will show you how to properly prepare and feed it.

Whenever possible, each bird will receive an avian veterinary examination before being placed into foster care, unless other arrangements have been made. If your foster bird becomes ill, is injured, or you notice any changes in their health or behavior, you must notify The Charlie Brown Bird Rescue immediately. Veterinary care must be approved by the rescue unless it is a life-threatening emergency.

Foster homes are responsible for providing the bird’s day-to-day care, including food, fresh water, cleaning, enrichment, and socialization. Foster volunteers are expected to purchase the bird’s ongoing food while it is in their care. While not required, any additional toys, treats, perches, or other supplies you choose to provide are greatly appreciated and help enrich the bird’s life.

Our goal is to ensure every foster bird receives a safe, loving, and enriching environment while they await their forever home. We are always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and support you throughout the fostering process.
